The "Fr. Luis Sodiro, S.I. Botanical Collection" is an
outstanding proof of the incommensurable richness of the Ecuadorian
flora and its hidden potential that still waits to be awakened.
Luis Sodiro, S.I. was born on May 22,1836 in Vicenza, Italy. He
joined the Society of Jesus when he was twenty years old. He began
his Jesuit formation in his native country and ended it in Innsbruck.
Here, he reached public recognition by his dedication to the botanical
studies.
Sodiro came to Ecuador in 1870 invited to found the first Polytechnic
School and never returned to Italy. He felt passion for the abundant
Ecuadorian flora and it influenced to live here until his death.
Luis Sodiro, S.I. passed away in Quito on May 15, 1909.
The Botanical Collection is registered in the World Index Botanical
Collections with its own letters QPLS. The collection gathers the
fruits of Sodiro´s expeditions to the most important regions
of Ecuador, so we can find specimens almost from the whole country.
